Shamanic Perspectives 2 – What’s in a Shaman’s Toolkit?

We already know Shamanism is a weird and different healing profession than most Americans understand.  What tools are in the Shaman’s toolkit?  This post pulls a few more concepts from my talk, Shamanic Perspective on Addiction and Mental Illness.

Intake is a huge tool in the Shamanic toolkit. All the Shamans I spoke with assess your symptoms and whether you are a good fit for Shamanic work.  The intake may include a sample of Shamanic healing work to make sure you respond well.

The Shaman’s Toolkit

Psychic Abilities

Shamans use psychic abilities to “see” where your spiritual energy is bound up, to find the underlying causes of your symptoms.  The Shaman’s spirit guides assist with providing and interpreting information, and with making the energetic shifts (healing) so your energy can flow freely again.

Altered States of Consciousness

Shamans use altered states of consciousness to gain resources from other realms and work more effectively with you.  There are many ways we achieve these altered states, including drumming and plant medicines.

Spiritual Technologies

Part of the Shaman’s toolkit includes using spiritual technologies such as curse busting, removal of interfering spirits, and past life regression.  Soul retrieval is one of the most common protocols.  When you’ve had a traumatic experience, either in this lifetime or in a past life, your energy becomes locked away and unavailable, which causes symptoms.  When the Shaman locates a lost part and returns it to you healed and whole, you can experience a huge boost in your life.  (That’s why I call it treasure-hunting!)

Shamans frequently mentor clients in the harmonious use of their energy, mind, emotions and body so they can achieve more of their goals and desires in life.  For example, if you’re going through a spiritual awakening, you may have symptoms of “mental illness” according to western psychology.  From a Shamanic perspective, many of these folks are spiritually talented and you can be trained to bring out your gifts to the world that needs them, in a sustainable and healthy way.
