Kambo: Frog Medicine from the Amazon

Frogs.

What do they make you think of?  Maybe your mind doesn’t think of powerful de-tox medicine. Yet there really is a powerful de-tox medicine from the Amazon rainforest that comes from a frog.

Have you ever heard a bullfrog?  Their call is as loud as a dog bark!  That’s the type of badass frog I’m talking about! An Amazonian bullfrog that is sooo badass, it doesn’t run from anything.  Seriously!!  One of these fearless medicine frogs came to our ceremony, and it sat on a bald man’s head for an hour with a bunch of singing dancing people all around.  The only time I saw it move was to turn around and look the other direction.

Kambô as a De-Tox Medicine

This badass frog’s medicine is called Kambô. It’s the next forest /plant technology I’m introducing in this series.  The reason this frog is fearless, is because everybody in the forest knows you better not eat him.  Because if you eat one, you will die.

Each Amazonian tribe has a legend about how Kambô treatments were discovered, and the Kaixinawá story is cool.  A Pajé (Shaman) was unable to heal his community of a horrible sickness – none of his herbs or rituals were working.  He went into the forest and took Mother Ayahuasca to receive a solution for this scary problem.  A powerful spirit guide told him how to find the poisonous Kambô frog, and he described exactly how to collect the venom off the skin and how to administer it to the sick people in his community.  The Pajé followed the instructions exactly, and cured his people! Legend says that when this Pajé died his spirit merged with this medicine frog.  (Adapted from the story in this online article.)

When taken in small doses and using this indigenous tribal method, the toxic venom from the skin of Kambô is a powerful force of healing.  I’ve had the opportunity to receive this plant medicine many times and will share my story, as well as links for further reading and an interview with a Kambô shaman.

Like fighting fire with fire, this venom medicine clears out toxins, such as those keeping people addicted to alcohol and other substances.  Some addicts have used Kambô to dramatically reduce or even remove their cravings, for long enough to change the course of their lives! It does a LOT for your immune system, and is indicated as a possible medicine for many other health conditions.  I heard a story of a woman who used Kambô to cure her uterine cancer without allopathic medicine, and she was about to have a healthy baby!

My Kambô Story

A doctor read a test result and told me I had extreme “congestion” in my immune system, this was the main reason I sought out the treatment.  As the ceremony began, I prayed and called my guides.  After the skin burns were made and the venom was applied in the traditional manner, Kambô showed me this congestion was actually emotional toxins stuck in my cells.  I asked for help, and the Kambô medicine blew those blocks out of my cells!  Then I cried as the emotional release unfolded over 20-30 minutes.  I felt pretty tired the rest of the day, then I felt amazing the following days. (Kambô is a Fountain of Youth!)

When most people experience Kambô, like many other indigenous medicines, it can be a pretty intense experience.  You will be in a full body heat flush that lasts 15-30 minutes as your body reacts to the venom. You will throw up or poop out toxins.  No pain, no gain, right?!  And you might look like a frog for awhile – take photos!

This is the second medicine in my forest medicine series. See below to find the other posts.

Interview with Frederico Reis on Kambô as De-Tox Medicine

My favorite Kambô Shaman is Frederico Reis, from the mountains north of Rio de Janeiro.  He creates a powerful ceremony and calls in his healing guide (a Caboclo).  These measures amplify the effectiveness of the medicine and keep your transformation gentle at the same time.  I had the privilege of interviewing Fred about Kambô, from the perspective of someone deciding if this de-tox medicine is right for them.

What kind of training do Kambô practitioners receive?

In indigenous tribes working with Kambô medicine, there are some variations in the ritual depending on the ethnic lineage of each group. It is common within these cultures to administer medicine to their equals, and they begin very young to receive medicine. The young are symptomatically evaluated for an education in how to administer to others.  The main belief within cultures is that to apply in others, you must do it on yourself many times.

In my personal experience, I had a non-indigenous master friend of mine who did a long treatment with me. It was for a certain necessity related to autoimmune imbalance, where I obtained a very positive result. And within this study, I was intuiting that I should go deeper into practice and study in others and myself the benefits. I believe that first a person must go through the experience of receiving a medicine and studying its effects on oneself. Learn the most extreme effects of the de-tox medicine experience in your own body and its practical results – such as strengthening of the organism. Also study the subtlety of mentally directing a specific cure (i.e. intention) during the treatment and those results for oneself.

How you get the medicine?

I buy only direct from safe indigenous sources, tribal people who work with the Kambô frog sustainably.  It is important to have fresh and vigorous medicine.  Sourcing the Kambô from the tribes enables an exchange of knowledge for us with their culture, and subsistence for these indigenous nations.

This article describes how the medicine is collected from the giant Kambô tree frog.

What kind of adverse reactions do people have and what do you do about it?

Kambô, besides being an indigenous medicine, is a toxin. It has not been studied much by allopathic science and is very dangerous. The practitioner considers the health of the cardiac tract and blood pressure of the participant, because it immensely elevates blood pressure.  The practitioner must also have psychological and emotional awareness and training, as many participants process on these levels with the Kambô as well.

The person who is going to (ad)minister the Kambô must have first-aid training and be emotionally focused to deal with any possible situation that may arise. A poorly controlled situation in the middle of a session can lead to very complicated extremes, including death.  Calmness, knowledge, decisiveness and strong intuition are very important for good results in the universe of possibilities within this study.

The article from Collective Evolution (6th paragraph) says it’s not a good idea to take Kambô if you have these heath conditions:

  • Heart and blood pressure conditions
  • people with organ transplants
  • pregnant and breast-feeding women
  • elderly and infirm

In what ways does it improve the health?

Kambô generates a stimulation of the glands and eliminates toxins through the bile tract and the upper glands, also acting in the liver. It strongly reinforces the autoimmune tract.  Apart from these areas, several people in my sessions have targeted specific cures using their intent during treatments, achieving very positive results.

If you’re curious whether Kambô can help you as a de-tox medicine, then please write an email to me at Kismet@OctaviaBrooks.com.  I will send information about my forest de-tox medicine events in Mexico, Brazil and Peru starting in September.

P.S. – The web articles linked in this post have some great information about Kambô.  This de-tox medicine hasn’t been studied by allopathic science very much yet! Here are the links again:

P.P.S. – I once met a fella who had a Frog tattooed on his head as a victory vote for Mother Earth. He did this because when you see frogs it means the land and water are healthy.
